Somebody…Anybody

The summer has been a great, planned out, whirlwind. From its onset we were prepping for the hopes to play in state tournaments for baseball. Well, we made it, but half of summer left us in the process. It is non-stop when the all-star season begins. It is practices daily and games when you are not practicing. It is an onslaught of never-ending schedules that overlap and will run you over if you are not prepared. I saw a video of an MLB grounds crew tarping the field and, in their rush, one of the crew members was overcome by the mega tarp and the grounds crew covered him up. There were no injuries, and it was hilarious!

For many of us we feel like we are the grounds crew member that nobody sees, notices, or recognizes their existence. We are under the tarp wondering if anyone notices that we are missing? Well, we notice, and we want you back! I have discovered that often we become oversensitive to the busyness, and it becomes personal. When we get inundated with “stuff” we begin to feel like we are not making a difference, that people will not notice if we are missing, that life is too fast and we are too slow, or that we will not ever accomplish anything of significance at our current pace and structure. Rest assured that you are valuable, you are loved, and self-hatred will not take you anywhere. Talking to yourself like you do not matter is garbage, and you deserve better.

When I was a graduating senior in college, I was overwhelmed with the thought of moving into real life with real responsibilities and bills that I had to pay. I had grown accustomed to prepared meals, a place to live, and friends all around me, all the time. Funny enough, the hardest adjustment I had to make when leaving college was not having my core group of guys, my football teammates, around me all the time. That adjustment was one of the hardest I ever had to endure. I sat in our chapel as a senior at Evangel University and God spoke to me through Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (NIV).”

Philippians 4:6 is a lifeline, we don’t have to figure it out, God already has. You may feel like you are under the tarp, and maybe you are? But we know you are there and take your time, sometimes it is nice to be in the peace and quiet.
